P5 Jungle How To

In the Brushes palette (11) expand the palette by clicking on the icon next to the big X in the upper right corner.  The palette will open fully (12).  Click on the Image Hose icon to select the nozzle brush.  In the maximized palette there are 4 pop up menu windows at the bottom.  The first window contains a list of all brushes in this brush library, click on it to access the menu list.  The one to the right contains the variants of the brush named in the brush window.  If yours does not say Small Random Spray, click on the window and select it from the menu list.  Change the Method to Buildup and the Subcategory to Soft Buildup if they are not already showing in the window.  These items affect how the Image Hose will spray the nozzle contents onto the painting.

Position the tigers so they are almost centered on your canvas and deselect them.  To create a Transparent Layer go to the Objects:Floater List palette, click on the words Floater/ Transparent Layer.  You will see a bounding box around the entire perimeter of your painting.  You can paint anywhere inside this area.  Press the “B” key to be sure the Paintbrush tool is active or you can go to the Tools palette (13) and click on the Paintbrush icon to select it.  Paint some random leaves in your painting.  You will have something that looks like this (14).

This won’t do.  What has happened is the Transparent Layer is just that, TRANSPARENT!  The drop shadow of the leaves needs color to be seen.  Painter creates the layer but fills it with White automatically. The Gray shadows are a result of the mixing of the original Black color and the White fill color of the TL.  Press Ctrl +Z to undo the leaves.  Click on the Bucket Tool in the Tools palette or press the letter “K” fill the layer with Red and apply the leaves again.  You now have Red shadows.  Press the Backspace Key to delete this layer and create a new one.  To fill the layer with the same color as the background, go the Art Materials palette.  Click on the Primary Color Box.  Using the Adjuster Tool (the pointing finger), press the Ctrl key, or press the “D” key and click once on the background.  The Primary Color automatically becomes the same as the background color, notice the Art Materials has updated from Red to the background color.  Fill the Transparent Layer.  Paint some leaves, they now look the way they are supposed to.
